Etymology[edit]

From Old Marathi 𑘢𑘲𑘎𑘜𑘹 (pīkaṇe), from Sanskrit पचति (pácati, to cook; to ripen; to mature), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *páćati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *páčati, from Proto-Indo-European *pékʷeti (to cook). Compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀓𑁆𑀓 (pikka, cooked, ripe), Gujarati પાકવું (pākvũ), Hindi पकना (paknā), Punjabi ਪੱਕਣਾ (pakkaṇā) / پکّنا (pkknā), Nepali पाक्नु (pāknu), Assamese পকা (poka). Related to पीक (pīk), पिके (pike).
