Seemingly from भरु (bharu, sea) +‎ कच्छ (kaccha, shore), but the first element may be non-Indic; compare the alternative form मरुकच्छ (marukaccha). The form भृगुकच्छ (bhṛgukaccha) is folk-etymological.
