Regularised from भीगा (bhīgā, wet) (see there for more), replacing भीजना (bhījnā), ultimately from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀺𑀬𑀚𑁆𑀬𑀢𑁂 (*bhiyajyate). Cognate with Punjabi ਭਿੱਜਣਾ (bhijjaṇā), Nepali भिज्नु (bhijnu), Gujarati ભીંજાવું (bhī̃jāvũ), Marathi भिजणे (bhijṇe), Konkani भिज्चे (bhijce), Bengali ভেজা (bheja), Assamese ভিজা (bhiza), Odia ଭିଜିଯିବା (bhijijiba), Pali abbhañjati (to anoint), Sanskrit अञ्ज् (añj, to anoint).[1]
