Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀟𑀻 (sāḍī), from Sanskrit शाटी (śāṭī), from शाट (śāṭa, strip of cloth). Doublet of शाल (śāl) through Persian. Compare Punjabi ਸਾੜ੍ਹੀ (sāṛhī) / ساڑھی (sāṛhī), Sindhi ساڙهيِ / साढ़ी, Gujarati સાડી (sāḍī), Marathi साडी (sāḍī), Bengali শাড়ি (śaṛi), Assamese শাৰী (xari), Sylheti ꠢꠣꠠꠤ (haṛi), Malayalam സാരി (sāri).
