From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰaymantás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeyméns, from *ǵʰey- (winter). Cognate with Latin hībernum (winter), Ancient Greek χεῖμᾰ (kheîma), Persian زمستان (zemestân), Old Armenian ձմեռն (jmeṙn), Avestan 𐬰𐬌𐬌𐬃 (ziiā̊, winter).
