Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀡𑀺𑀬𑀸 (kaṇiyā, grain, drop), from Sanskrit কণিকা (kaṇikā), feminine form of কণ (kaṇa, grain; particle), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kánas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kánas, from Proto-Indo-European *kón-os, from *ken- (dust, ashes).
