Gujarati[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian آواز (āwāz), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾwʾz /āwāz/, “voice, sound, tune”), from Middle Persian 𐭥𐭠𐭰 (ʿʾc /wāč/) 𐭥𐭠𐭦 (ʿʾz /wāz/, “word, speech”), from Proto-Iranian *vaxša-, from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs (“speech, voice”). Doublet of વાક (vāk). Compare Hindustani आवाज़ / آواز (āvāz), Bengali আওয়াজ (aōẇaj) and Punjabi ਅਵਾਜ਼ (avāz).
