Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀁𑀟𑀺𑀅 (paṃḍia), from Sanskrit पण्डित (paṇḍita). Cognate to Nepali पाँड़े (pā̃ṛe), Bengali পাঁড়ে (pãṛe), Hindi पाँड़े (pā̃ṛe), Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘽𑘚𑘿𑘧𑘰 (pāṇḍyā).
