Etymology

From உவச்சன் (uvaccaṉ), derived from Sanskrit उपाध्याय (upādhyāya). Compare Telugu ఒజ్జే (ojjē); doublet of உவாத்தி (uvātti), உபாத்தி (upātti), வாத்தியாயர் (vāttiyāyar), ஓச்சன் (ōccaṉ), and வாத்தியார் (vāttiyār).
