Etymology[edit]
From Sanskrit दारु (dā́ru, “wood, timber”) + -వు (-vu); from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dāru-, from Proto-Indo-European *dóru. Cognates include Ancient Greek δρῦς (drûs), Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎽𐎢𐎺 (d-a-ru-u-v /dāruv/) and Old English trēow (English tree).
