Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Tai *ɗwɯːᴬ (“navel”). Cognate with Shan လီ (lǐi) (as in သၢႆလီ (sǎai lǐi)), Tai Nüa ᥘᥤ (li) (as in ᥔᥣᥭᥴᥘᥤ (sáayli)), Zhuang ndw. Compare Proto-Hlai *Cuɾɯː (“navel”), Proto-Austronesian *puja ~ *pujek (“navel, umbilical cord”) (whence Paiwan pudek).
