Etymology

[edit]

From Old Khmer tralēṅa kēṅa (four-sided; four-faced). Cognate with Modern Khmer ត្រឡែងកែង (trɑlaeng kaeng, four-sided, four-face; intersection, crossroads, confluence (of rivers); four-sided structure).

The last sense was from the fact that the execution of criminals was traditionally held at a crossroads.
