From Proto-Tai *daːᴮ (“river”). Cognate with Isan ท่า, Lao ທ່າ (thā), Northern Thai ᨴ᩵ᩤ, Khün ᨴ᩵ᩤ, Lü ᦑᦱᧈ (taa¹), Shan တႃႈ (tāa, “pier; shallow place in water”), Tai Nüa ᥖᥣ (taa), Zhuang dah (“river”).
