Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *kliəŋꟲ² (smooth; clean) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩖ᩠ᨿ᩶ᨦ, Khün ᨠ᩠ᨿ᩶ᨦ, Lao ກ້ຽງ (kīang), Isan เกลี้ยง, ᦵᦂᧂᧉ (k̇eng²), Tai Dam ꪀꪸ꫁ꪉ, Shan ၵဵင်ႈ (kāeng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥥᥒᥲ (kèng).
