From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlawᴬ¹ (“to sharpen with a knife”). Cognate with Lao ເຫຼົາ (lao), Lü ᦜᧁ (l̇aw), Shan လဝ် (lǎo), Saek เหล่า.
