From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰwɛːnᴬ¹ (ring; bangle). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩯᨶ, Lao ແຫວນ (wǣn), ᦶᦛᧃ (v̇aen), Tai Dam ꪵꪪꪙ, Shan ဝႅၼ် (wěn), Tai Nüa ᥝᥦᥢᥴ (wáen), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜐𑜫 (biñ). Compare Middle Chinese (MC hwaen).
