Ge'ez[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Cognate to Amharic ማእድ (maʾd), ማድ (mad), Tigre ማእድ (maʾəd), Tigrinya መኣዲ (mäʾaddi), መዓዲ (mäʿaddi). A derivation from the accusative of Ancient Greek μαγίς (magís, kneading trough; small table), likewise the source of Georgian მაგიდა (magida, table) and having a geminate in Sicilian maidda (kneading trough), is formally possible; while the geographic steps towards this result are odd, note, just to underline the oddity, the Standard Arabic term from Egypt for the notion of a kneading-trough: مَاجُور (mājūr).
