Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The musical instrument was a square with strings, so it probably has nothing to do with the shoe. Furnée analyses the shoe as a suffix -αρος added to ἀσκός (askós, skin, bag made of skin). The similarity with ἀσκέρα (askéra, winter shoe) could also suggest a Pre-Greek origin of this word.
