From Old Japanese, from Proto-Japonic *karasu.

Compound of から (kara, caw, onomatopoeia, imitative of a crow's caw) +‎ (su, bird, ancient suffix appearing in certain bird names).[1] Compare the (su) in (uguisu), 杜鵑 (hototogisu), モズ (mozu).
