Glyph origin[edit]
Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) – (⿱丵臼*) A chisel inside of a mortar, an ancient form of 鑿, dating back to oracle bone inscriptions, components such as 殳 and 金 were added later.

Used as a shorthand in popular novels of the Qing dynasty.
Eventually adopted as an official simplified character by the People's Republic of China in the 1956 Chinese Character Simplification Scheme.
