Etymology[edit]
Compound of 牛 (ushi, “cow”) + ぬ (nu, possessive particle) + 乳 (chī, “milk”). Cognate with Japanese 牛の乳 (ushi no chichi, rare alternate reading ushi no chī, literally “cow's milk”), more commonly expressed in modern Japanese using the Chinese-derived term 牛乳 (gyūnyū).
