Derivation unknown.

First cited to the 膏薬煉 (Kōyaku-neri), the title of a 狂言 (kyōgen, “farcical interlude”) song dating to the late 1500s, early 1600s.

Originally referred to a leather oblong bag hung from one's waist, used for storing bullets, as also described in the 1603 日葡辞書 (Nippo Jisho). Over time, other uses and materials came into fashion, such as use as a handbag or tobacco pouch, or manufacture from 羅紗 (rasha, “woolen felt”). By the early Meiji period (1868­–1912), leather was again a popular material, and uses had evolved to include everything from handbags to satchels.

In roughly the first decade of the Meiji period, this term was mostly displaced by the term 鞄 (kaban), and usage or this term 胴乱 (dōran) became restricted.
