Derived from Classical Persian ـِستَان, influenced by Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna). Compare Malayalam -സ്ഥാന് (-sthānŭ), Bengali -স্তান (-stan). Doublet of ஸ்தானம் (stāṉam), தானி (tāṉi), and தானம் (tāṉam).
