Old Spanish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Latin -ellam, accusative of -ella.
Pronunciation[edit]
Suffix[edit]
-iella (masculine -iello)
- (added to feminine nouns and adjectives) A diminutive suffix.
Usage notes[edit]
Some Old Spanish terms apparently suffixed with -iello may actually be direct descendants of Latin diminutives formed with -ellus, and will therefore not have a corresponding non-diminutive form:
- manziella (“blemish”), from Late Latin macella, not a diminutive of *manza
