Etymology[edit]
Both sections of the hamlet are attested asdiifwech and diefwech in 1284. Likely a compound of Middle Dutch dief (“thief”) and wech (“way, road”), referring here to a road which cost a lot of money to maintain. Named after a nearby levee.
