German[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
- (idiomatic, chiefly in the negative) fault and blame
- 2017 October 4, Lisa Nienhaus, quoting Josef Ackermann, “Wer macht schon keine Fehler?”, in Die Zeit[1]:
- Wir, die wir damals die Deutsche Bank geführt haben, sind sicher nicht ohne Fehl und Tadel, aber wir müssen uns auch vor niemandem verstecken.
- Us who ran Deutsche Bank back then are surely not without fault, but we do not have to hide from anyone either.
Usage notes[edit]
Almost always used in negation with ohne or kein:
- Niemand ist ohne Fehl und Tadel
- nobody is perfect
- (literally, “nobody is without fault and blame”)
