Eastern Zealandic dialectal descendant of Old Danish *Iærpshø̄ghæ, earliest recorded in 1280 as Iærphøhæ. From Old Norse, compound of genitive form of male given name Jarpr and plural form of haugr. The English geographical term Jersey is a false cognate.
