Borrowed from Low German and Middle Low German krabbe, probably from the root of krabbeln.

Cognate with Dutch krab, English crab, Old Norse krabbi (Norwegian krabbe, Swedish krabba). Root cognate with crawl, scrape. More at crab. Further origin unknown; either from a substrate language, or, if inherited, related to kerben. Compare Latin carabus.
