Etymology

Probably from a zero-grade extension *li-ro- of Proto-Indo-European *(s)lei- (“slime, slimy, sticky”) (see also English slime (noun)). DNGI instead suggests a derivation from a pre-Roman hydronym *liri- (“muddy water”).
