Etymology

[edit]

From misinterpretation of Swedish Malmö (literally Ore Hill) (from Middle Danish Malmhauge), mistaking for ö (island, ey in Icelandic), although here has a different etymology, being derived from Old Norse haugr (Icelandic haugur, Swedish hög), of earlier Proto-Germanic and ultimate Proto-Indo-European origin.
