[edit]From Latin nuphar, from Byzantine Greek νούφαρο (noúpharo), from Arabic نُوفَر (nūfar), from Middle Persian nylw(k)pl (nīlōpal, “lotus, water-lily”), from Sanskrit नीलोत्पल (nīlotpala).
