From Proto-West Germanic *gaiʀ, from Proto-Germanic *gaizaz (“spear, pike, javelin”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoys-ós (“pointed stick, spear”), from *ǵʰey- (“to drive, move, fling”).
