Possibly reflecting Proto-Indo-European *sewh₁-yéh₂[1], from Proto-Indo-European *sewh₁- (to set in motion).

Sometimes compared with Proto-Slavic *sujь (vain, futile), which is alternatively linked to Proto-Indo-European *ḱewH- (to be hollow).
