Etymology

Uncertain, but often derived from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰyem- (in o-grade *ǵʰyom- with loss of -y-) and cognate with Latin hiems (winter). Alternatively, it is an old compound, *ḱom-h₂el-o, related to *aldaz (old).
