[edit]Likely from Pre-Germanic *kelh₂tís, from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂- (“to hit, strike”). Cognate with Latin clādēs (“destruction”), Ancient Greek κόλος (kólos, “hornless”), Lithuanian kálti (“to strike, forge”), Russian колоть (kolotʹ, “to prick”).
