Etymology

Clauson suggests a diminutive formation *kirpi (hedgehog) +‎ *-k.

Nishanyan and ESTJa instead suggest a derivation *kïrp- (to shave; to wink) +‎ *-k, however this should've yielded the earliest form *kïrpuk.

Noun
