[edit]- (Zeeland) First attested as in pago scaldis in 970. Derived from the dative plural form of the hydronym Old Dutch Scalde (“Scheldt”). Compare Nieuweschild and Oudeschild.
- (Groningen) First attested as schuwum in 1371. Potentially derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian *skûve (“uncovered barge, ferry”).
