According Platts' dictionary, the word comes from Sanskrit प्रिय (priya) + आल (aal). --Dijan 04:52, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The etymology currently listed is from McGregor, a much newer source. McGregor based his work on Platts' and a number of other works, so he looked at Platts' etymologies and updated them with more modern sources. The state of etymological information wasn't as complete in Platts' time, something he mentions in his frontmatter too. So based on that, I tend to prefer McGregor's information wherever they are different. Also, neither Cappeller's or Monier-Williams have an entry for आल by itself and nothing related I could find as a substring. - Taxman 15:09, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
