It's definitely not respectful when used by someone much younger than the target. It's also used colloquially to refer to your husband/male partner (between an aged couple normally), in which case, it's used as a term of endearment. It is often used in its diminutive form in this sense (老头子).JamesjiaoTC 22:53, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
