Derailed Usage[edit]

I believe that this word is illegitimate, and should be discouraged, insofar as it is used to mean to "put to bed" or (acostarse) to go to bed. As in English, https://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/middle-english-dictionary/dictionary/MED392, there is no such antecedent in English "acost" or "accost".

It's cousin in English "accost" similarly has devolved into usage totally detached from its ancestry. "late 16th century (originally in the sense ‘lie or go alongside’): from French accoster, from Italian accostare, from Latin ad- ‘to’ + costa ‘rib, side’."
