@Ultimateria Indeed the word in this vocalization exists, قَلَوِيّ (qalawiyy), so Almaany, so vocalizes Nabil Osman in his German-Arabic dictionary (2015) under Alkali as well as alkalisch, i. e. both for noun and adjective. Ahmad Mukhtar Umar gives both قَلَوِيّ (qalawiyy) and قِلْوِيّ (qilwiyy) on various places, Wehr gives only قِلْوِيّ (qilwiyy), as adjective and a plural القِلْوِيَّات (al-qilwiyyāt) meaning a noun-sense “bases”. I am unsure what the pronunciation قَلَوِيّ (qalawiyy) could derive from – possibly from a قِلًى (qilan, “base, alkali”, noun) mentioned in Wehr, with a linking ـَوـ (-aw-) as أُنْثَوِيّ (ʔunṯawiyy); there are a lot of newer formations with that wāw interfix lacking in Wehr, like تَوْعَوِيّ (tawʕawiyy). Or it is a phono-semantic matching of the European, the word being under pressure to have this /kal/ syllable like it sounds everywhere else. Fay Freak (talk) 20:34, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
