carpet: False friend or distant cousin?[edit]

"Carpeta is a false friend, and does not mean carpet. Spanish equivalents are shown in the "Translations" section of the English entry carpet."

However, this very page says carpeta is from Fr. carpette, and fr:carpette lists under Étymologie: from English en:carpet. Perhaps carpeta is refering to folders/bags made of carpet? (such as a carpetbag). The usage on carpeta lists tablecloth as well as a regional usage. Srl (talk) 19:57, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

False friend means that the meanings are different, not that the words are unrelated (that would be a false cognate). — Ungoliant (falai) 20:12, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
