Etymology

Probably from 卷 (juàn, "scroll, roll") but not 卷/捲 (juǎn, "to roll"), judging from the tone. There are many descendants of 卷 in Vietnamese: cuốn ("roll, scroll; to roll up"), cuộn ("roll, coil, spool"), cuợn ("to roll up; coil"), quận ("to wind, to roll up"), quấn ("to wind, to twine") and the SV reading quyển ("volume, book"). Um, yes. This is not the SV reading, so there is some chance that Vietnamese had a native word which resembled 卷 in both pronunciation and meaning.. although the possibility that this is a Vietnamised Sino-Vietnamese word or an Old Sino-Vietnamese borrowing is much higher. Seems to be created by someone believing in the common origin of Vietnamese and Chinese and someone promoting an orthographic reform of Vietnamese =D But otherwise, pretty good. Hbrug 00:20, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
