I noticed on ebay the phrase "enchérire égale acheter", which I think means "winning the bid equals buying", "if you win the auction you buy it" (presumably written by people frustrated because of auction winners not buying). Something to put on this page as a use?

enchérir, in auctions, means to bid, to propose a price higher than the current one, not to buy. You're probably right in your interpretation of the ebay statement but, although this statement is not very clear, it does not make the sense of enchérir different.
