I am having difficulty with the usage of the word 'entitlement' by congress. Its use implies something for nothing, when in fact of course we have been paying (overpaying) social security and medicare tax payments for decades. Congress has been enjoying a surplus of tax payments, for many years and now as demographics catch up with us, a crisis nears. The crisis is that the tax surpluses will be soon gone. Well, in any event, I cringe when the word entitlement is used to describe these tax payer benefits.

It's amusing that people often post things online (i.e.: Facebook, etc.) complaining with statements such as "Social Security is not an entitlement, we earned it!". That's exactly what entitlement means. :)

Missing sense?[edit]

Can't it also mean being entitled, i.e. having a bratty sense that you are owed something? Equinox 21:52, 18 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
