Sense verification[edit]
In response to Equinox' tag, having watched a lot of anime I've definitely heard it being used as a noun, it's an accusation shouted at many characters doing something accused of lecherous. For example (and I'm not saying that this forum post should be listed as a source, merely demonstrative), a fan addressing another fan bringing up this issue in 2006: [1]. I can go find some specific scenes in anime (episode number, time) where this happens, but I am unsure how to properly cite that as a source, nor how to make this a source which others would find acceptable since not all anime is possible to watch without buying it. Would it be better to link to an anime which is streamed free legally via sponsors on sites like crunchyroll?
I am also wondering, out of multiple anime to choose, which would be best. As far as I can figure, one showing the earliest known use (lowest year) and one showing the most recent known use (highest year) would give readers of this definition a sense of the minimum spanse of time we can verify it to occur. I believe it is still ongoing in modern animated manga adaptations, and has been present for at least a decade, though am unsure how far back. Dictabeard 16:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

- Hentai is a romanization of the Japanese pronunciation of a word, while the meaning of a lot of words have had new usages and reinterpretations by fans (like how otaku was made positive) this doesn't mean we should assume that fans have all done this. The presentation of words' original meanings is important for etymological reasons. In some cases, Japanese words are maintained in translations (like keeping honorific suffixes). I'm not sure what would be an acceptable attest to satisfy this, but fans emulate common Japanese catch phrases (like itadakimasu) when speaking amongst themselves. - The Etymology section of the entry is the place for etymological information. It now says that the Japanese word from with this derives means "perversion". That seems to cover it. The issue of whether it has ever been used to mean "pervert" in English is separate and requires finding citations from "durably archived sources" that unambiguously show such meaning in use. The most promising way is to search Google Books. Based on what you say, usenet groups might be a good source too. They are findable as a subset of Google Groups. - Delete as presented. If it is a legit borrowing, used as an English word, it should be redefined as an English word. Otherwise if it is common move to a romanization section under a Japanese L2.
