Request for pronunciation

[edit]

Would be nice to have the pronunciation in there somewhere. —This unsigned comment was added by 142.16.22.18 (talkcontribs) 2006-06-19 13:31:14.

Label pejorative (?)

[edit]

In my experience, this (and also pedantic) is always used pejoratively. --203.52.130.160 04:59, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Freud a fourth?

[edit]
"The pedant is he who finds it impossible to read criticism of himself without immediately reaching for his pen and replying to the effect that the accusation is a gross insult to his person." Sigmund Freud, The Ego and the Id, 1923

Does anyone have an idea of which of the three definitions this would fit under? It seems to be a mix of all three but not one in particular. Could it be a fourth usage? It appears to be describing someone prone to defensiveness and insecurity, someone who sees an assault on one idea as an assault on their whole person, something along those lines. This goes outside concern with rules, vocab-emphasized knowledge or teaching. Etym (talk) 19:33, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
