"Light fixture" sense[edit]

Chambers 1908 divides this into a few types: "Sconce, skons, n. the part of a candlestick for the candle: a hanging candlestick with a mirror to reflect the light: a lantern". Equinox 21:03, 27 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Century does similarly, "1. A lantern with a protecting shade; a dark lantern; any lantern. 2. A candlesitck having the form of a bracket projecting from a wall or column; also, a group of such candlesticks, [...] 3. The socket for the candle in a candlestick of any form, especially when having a projecting rim around it." - -sche (discuss) 00:14, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Rfv-sense "helmet". It's mentioned in some older dictionaries like Century, so it's possible it's out there, but it doesn't seem to have been retained by modern dictionaries(?) and the only hits I found, searching together with "visor" or other armor terms, mean "head" not "helmet". Without other citations where sconce means helmet, I think even the Shakespeare cite is ambiguous and could parsimoniously be read as just figurative use of the more general sense "defensive work", which is how the old OED interprets it. - -sche (discuss) 09:56, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
