Etymology (Italian)[edit]

-gi- instead of -zz- means either a borrowing or a contamination by stadium, doesn't it? 37.47.224.113 01:40, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Unlikely to be either. Latin words with -ationem are borrowed into Italian with -azione, and stadium would just result in stadio. Neither of those could explain the /dʒ/ of stagione. There's also the fact that the word has rather different senses than are found in Latin for statio.
If I had to venture a guess, I'd say Italian borrowed this from a neighbouring Italo-Romance variety where native words regularly show this outcome for Latin [-tj-] (or show some outcome which was adapted into Italian as /dʒ/). Another word in this category is ragione.
