Substing

[edit]

I disagree with the mandatory (or even voluntary) substitution of these templates, as I have explained on RFDO and elsewhere; substitution removes at least 50% of the use-value of templates such as these. I have revised the instructions accordingly. -- Visviva 10:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maybe it would be good to get rid of "-" sign after the prefix, just like {{suffix}} does it, for the sake of uniformity.. --Ivan Štambuk 13:16, 13 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Apparently this is due to lang parameter. Compare:
{{suffix|do|ing}} -> do +‎ -ing
{{suffix|do|ing|lang=en}} -> do +‎ -ing (hyphen missing)
{{prefix|re|make}} -> re- +‎ make
{{prefix|re|make|lang=en}} -> re- +‎ make
So this template is OK and the other one should be fixed (Or it makes more sense to remove the hyphen completely?) --Ivan Štambuk 13:29, 13 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fixed suffix. --Bequw 13:12, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Translation parameters

[edit]
As this template is applied in the etymology sections in instances where {{term}} might be applied, I think it would be reasonable to allow for translations parameters as this is implemented for the term template. The code could check if there were more than two parameters suplied and if so assign pairs of term/translation. __meco 13:14, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

From

[edit]

See Template talk:suffix#From H. (talk) 09:25, 23 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reverted (by Robert) as change was not discussed and the template is used widely (breaking many existing usages). See Wiktionary:Beer parlour#The prefix template is broken. --Bequw¢τ 06:36, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Categorisation

[edit]

Before the automatic categorisation based on lang= (with implicit lang=en) was added, a number of FL entries used this template, which subsequently put their entries into "English words starting with xxx-". Someone should make a cleanup dump of FL entries having {{prefix}} invocations without the lang= specified (and prob. also for {{suffix}}). --Ivan Štambuk 16:54, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category sorting

[edit]

Wouldn’t it be better use the root as the sorting key in the … words prefixed with xxx- category? Currently, e.g. all entries in Category:English words prefixed with grand- are sorted under G. --Mormegil 20:30, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I came here to suggest the same thing... —CodeCat 20:27, 23 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
So, {{{sort|{{#if:{{{2|}}}|{{{2}}}|{{SUBPAGENAME}}}}}}} ? —RuakhTALK 02:54, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

Please fix forebear. --Espoo (talk) 23:08, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

That doesn't work. You should use the id2= parameter and the {{senseid}} template to link to specific senses. —CodeCat 00:54, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please add documentation for |lang1= and |lang2= à la Template:suffix

(Notifying Dixtosa, Rua, Benwing2): It can just be copy-pasted over. --Fytcha (talk) 02:34, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
